Sangha Description:

We welcome everyone -- from the simply curious, to beginning meditators, as well as experienced practitioners -- to our weekly Tuesday evening meetings at the Sky Creek Dharma Center.  We first sit silently in meditation for 30 minutes, then break for tea and conversation, and reassemble for the evening’s program. Tuesday evening gatherings start at 6:30 and end around 8:15.

Our evening programs include a

  • First Tuesday night of silent walking and seated meditation.
  • Two monthly dharma book discussions [2nd and 3rd Tuesdays].
  • A dharma talk by a Heather Sundberg [4th Tuesday].
  • On “Fifth Tuesdays” a work meditation and/or potluck dinner.

Dharma books we have read recently include

The Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield,

Buddhism Without Beliefs by Stephen Batchelor

Dancing with Life by Phillip Moffitt

Pay Attention for Goodness Sake by Sylvia Boorstein.

The Dhammapada translated by E. Easwaran

Our principal teacher is Heather Sundberg, who also teaches at Mountain Stream Meditation Center in Nevada City, CA, at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA, as well as at other US venues and internationally.  When she visits Chico on Tuesdays, Heather is available for individual one-hour conferences about daily life issues of practice. Heather has a web site, www.heathersundberg.com, where you can learn more about her and her teaching.

Each year we present two to four one day meditation retreats lead by our teacher or by sangha members who have long-term meditation practices.  In 2011-2012 the three daylong retreat topics were “Equanimity: Finding Balance of Heart in a Turbulent World” and “Transforming the Judgmental Mind,” and “Who do you take Yourself to be Right Now?  Self and Not-Self,” taught by Heather Sundberg. “Preparing for Death: A Buddhist Perspective” was taught by sangha member Karma Ganzler.  Aimee J. Mattilla, another sangha member presented “One World, Two Truths: The Compassion and Wisdom of Buddha and Christ.”

Heart of the Lotus Sangha was founded in October 2002 by CSU, Chico Professor Tracy McDonald at the suggestion of her teacher John Travis, a member of the Teacher’s Council at Spirit Rock Meditation Center and founder of Mountain Spring Meditation Center.  Tracy was our sangha’s principal teacher and inspiration until she relocated to Portland Oregon in May 2010.
